Shona Sculpture

The Shona people are indigenous people of Zimbabwe, a small country in southern Africa. The naturally talented Shona people, unaided by formal artistic education are masters in the creation of beautiful sculpture. Using only the rudimentary tools of a hammer and carving chisel, these natural artisans handcraft black serpentine and rapocco stone into the lovely flowing lines so characteristic of Shona sculpture. The sculpture of Zimbabwe provides a unique cultural insight to the values and beliefs of the Shona people.
